FAQs

Will my data be secure on Homecloud?

Homecloud is designed for security. It has multiple protection layers built in to protect your privacy and freedom:

Network security:

To prevent unauthorised network access,  Homecloud, by default, will only be accessible either over your local Wi-Fi or if enabled over a VPN. This limits attack surface significantly.

  • Firewall: Homecloud has built in and hardened network and app firewall to protect against known threats.
  • SSL: All network traffic is encrypted both by VPN as well as TLS (app level).

End to End Encryption (E2E):

Sensitive data like Passwords and Notes are E2E encrypted. So, even if your device is in wrong hands, your data is not. No backdoors.

Data durability:

Homecloud is built on high performance and durable Solid State Disks(SSDs). SSDs are built to last for decades as there are no moving parts (unlike hard disks).  You can further safeguard data with one click backup of data to external USB disks. Just plug-in USB disk to Homecloud and take backup of your data.

How can i increase storage?

There are 2 options:

  1. Plug-in external USB disks (up-to 4) and access them as network drive to store more data.
  2. We offer ship-in upgrades from 1 TB to 2 TB. Ship us your Homecloud and we will upgrade storage. Currently 2 TB is max we are supporting. This is expected to increase in coming months.
What about software updates?

There are 2 type of software updates:

  1. Homecloud core software: Homecloud core updates are provided by us and all our code is also open source. These are automatically deployed (if you have enabled).
  2. App updates:
App updates are provided by opensource app project community. As an when they are released Homecloud will automatically  (if you have enabled) update the app backends. App front end on your access devices are updated by your device app stores (Google Play, App store).
How it is different from any other public cloud like Google photos, iCloud?

There are many:

  1. Your data resides with you in your control.
  2. No one else without your permission can access your data
  3. No monthly costs.
  4. Choose to keep your data offline or share with world.
What happens in case of hardware failure?

Although we use high quality hardware (Raspberry Pi 5 with durable SSD storage) things still can go wrong. We can replace hardware (if under warranty) but for data we highly recommend to keep data backup on a USB drive. Homecloud enables you to take data backups quickly and easily. So do follow best practices for backup.

Is Homecloud powerful enough for my needs?

Homecloud provides very good price/performance ratio with low power consumption (you don’t need to worry about electricity bills). We have tested it for more than 400,000 (4 Lacs)+ photos along with thousands of documents, simultaneous computer backups  and music streaming. It is cost effective solution for families, content creators and small business.
